Vancouver stand-up comedy show donating funds to Ukrainian families impacted by war

Like many people worldwide overwhelmed with a helpless feeling as they watch Russia’s war on Ukraine, local comedians are stepping off of the sidelines and taking action to raise money for families in need.

“A lot of us have been watching this from a distance and are mortified, and angered, and highly emotional about what’s going on. As performers we wanted to do something,” comedian Peter Kelamis tells CityNews.

Kelamis is one of seven comics putting on a show called ‘1 Night Stand‘ next weekend at the Cultch’s York Theatre. Organizers and comics are volunteering their time and talents, with all money raised going to charity.

“And we’re putting on a night of laughs to raise money and help in any way we can,” he said.

“It’s so disheartening to turn on the news every night and watch what’s happening to these helpless civilians. You don’t have to be Ukrainian to have your heart hurt and affected by what we’re watching here. From a humanitarian standpoint, it’s horrific,” he added.

When Kelamis started calling around to see if fellow comedians would be interested in participating, he said the only folks who said no were those who were out of town.

The show takes place Saturday, April 9, at the Cultch’s York Theatre. All proceeds of the event will be donated to the Rose Charites Canada Ukraine Emergency Fund. Tickets start at $25.
