One arrested after Maple Ridge police incident prompts public alert

One person has been arrested after RCMP in Maple Ridge issued a public alert over an investigation Monday.

Mounties say someone on Harrison Street called 9-1-1 at around 1 p.m.

“The caller alleged that two suspects had entered a house while the occupants were home and that one of the suspects allegedly had a gun. The suspects then fled on foot,” reads a statement issued by Cpl. Julie Klaussner with Ridge Meadows RCMP.

At around 2 p.m., police issued a public alert, asking everyone to stay away from the area of Glenhurst Street and Dewdney Trunk Road. A man was arrested a short time later. He remains in custody.

Thomas Haney Secondary and Golden Ears Elementary schools, as well as the Arthur Peak Centre were briefly placed on a “hold and secure.”

“Students and staff are safe and instruction continues,” the school district said on Twitter, about 20 minutes before sharing an update that the safety measure had been lifted.

“Calls of this nature are taken very seriously which is why the public saw such a large police response and nearby schools enacted a ‘hold and secure’ in response to this incident,” Klaussner said.

“A large police presence can be unnerving for our citizens but it’s always best to respond appropriately and scale back when safe to do so. The investigation has revealed that this was an isolated incident and is not random.”
