Prince Charles, Camilla coming to Canada in May for 3-day royal tour

By Lucas Casaletto and The Canadian Press

Prince Charles and his wife Camilla will return to Canada in May.

Clarence House and the Governor-General of Canada announced the three-day royal tour this morning.

They say the royal couple will travel to Newfoundland and Labrador, the Northwest Territories and the Ottawa region.

A detailed itinerary is expected at a later date.

This will be the 19th visit to Canada for the Prince of Wales and the fifth for the Duchess of Cornwall.

Their most recent visit was in 2017 when they travelled to Iqaluit, Ottawa, Trenton and Wellington in Ontario, and Gatineau, Que.

“The Prince and The Duchess are looking forward to returning to Canada following their last visit in 2017. TRHs have links with a number of Canadian charities, and military affiliations,” The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall said on Twitter.

“During a past visit with The Duchess of Cornwall, The Prince said: ‘It is, as always, a special joy to be back in Canada again – a place that is very dear to us both. We are always made to feel so much at home in Canada and are greatly touched by the warmth of your welcome.'”

Gov. Gen. Mary Simon met Charles and Camilla for the first time last month during Simon’s trip to London.

“As we celebrate The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee this year, Whit and I will be delighted to welcome Their Royal Highnesses, The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall to Canada,” Simon said in a statement.

“This visit is a chance for us to showcase the evolution of our country, our diverse and inclusive society, as well as the resilience of Indigenous communities.”

Canada is the most visited country by The Queen during her reign.

Senior royals from around the world gathered on March 29 for a memorial service for Prince Philip at Westminster Abbey. Philip died just over a year ago, on April 9.

In March, Queen Elizabeth, who recovered from COVID-19, didn’t attend a Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey earlier in the month. Still, she continued with other scheduled engagements, including in-person audiences.
