Sunwing flights back on schedule after cyberattack caused system-wide failure

After several days of flight delays for Sunwing passengers, the airline said on Friday its schedule is back to normal.

The delays and long lines at Pearson Airport started on Sunday, after a cyberattack triggered a system-wide failure for the airline, which affected boarding and check-in features.

In a statement to CityNews, it said flights that were delayed because of the outage have been resolved or are in progress.

“Check-in times and passenger processing may be slower than usual throughout the coming days until we fully relaunch our passenger handling system,” it said, and any further changes to the schedule are not related to the system issue.

The airline is encouraging customers to check online its website for their flight status and latest on departure times.

“We thank our customers for their patience and understanding as we worked around the clock to resume regular flight operations this week,” it said.

The airline said as of Thursday 188 flights were impacted by delays since the system issue started.

It also said at the time the airline’s third-party systems provider, Airline Choice, was working on resolving the system issue after it was compromised in the network.

Airline Choice previously confirmed to CityNews a data security event caused the disruption to a number of computer systems and as so the company took certain systems offline, then launched an investigation in efforts to find out the source of the disruption.

Sunwing’s president has also said the airline will be offering cash compensation to passengers involved, which varied on the length of the delays.
