If you’re planning to drive across the Lions Gate Bridge this weekend during the evening, you will have to find an alternate route.
The bridge will be closed in both directions for three consecutive nights as crews work on upgrading the counterflow system from the Vancouver-North Shore link. On Friday the bridge will be closed between 10 p.m. and 8 a.m., while on Saturday and Sunday, it will be closed between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m.
“The closures are necessary to complete the counterflow system upgrade, which will include a changeover and testing of the electrical system,” reads a statement from the B.C. Ministry of Transportation.
Upgrades will include a changeover and testing of the new electrical system.
Motorists will be directed to use the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge while the work is being done.
Emergency vehicles will be able to cross, as well as late night buses when the SeaBus is not operation.
During the day, the bridge and causeway will be open to traffic with a partial counterflow in place, using each second lane control signal.
The sidewalk on the east side of the bridge will stay open for pedestrians and bicycle traffic the entire time.
An estimated 60,000 drivers cross the Lions Gate Bridge every day, according to the province.
