Cold Vancouver April fails to break monthly records despite frigid temperatures

As we shivered our way through much of the month, cold-weather records were broken in April.

But has it been the chilliest April ever for Vancouver? Not quite, according to CityNews 1130 Meteorologist Michael Kuss.

“It’s been a cold month, but definitely not record-setting. In fact, after the next three days, it will probably go down as the 12th coldest April since 1937 when we started keeping records at YVR.”

He says temperatures for the city have been well below average for the month.

“Normal temperatures, the mean, is around 9.4 degrees Celsius. We will likely finish the month at 7.7 to 7.9 degrees for a mean temperature. That’s a full degree and a half below average.”

While it hasn’t been a record-setting April overall, Michael says it is notable that we have seen very little variability in the temperature.

“In fact, only two days have been above 15 degrees for daytime highs through the entire month. Often in April, it’s such a transitional month, we’ll see daytime highs — at least a handful – where it’s 17 to 20 degrees and that will be balanced by daytime highs where it only gets up to five or six degrees.”

Some temperature records broken

What did get shattered in a number of B.C. communities were daily records.

Over the Easter weekend, Vancouver hit a record low of -1.2 degrees Celsius for April 16.

The next day, Victoria dropped to -1.7 degrees, the coldest Easter Sunday temperature ever in that city.

If you’re wondering (and of course you are) the lowest low ever recorded in Vancouver in April was a not-so-spring-like -3.3 degrees Celsius on April 19, 1951.
