Vancouver School District blames ‘high volume’ for summer school registration issues

The Vancouver School District is blaming a “high volume of requests” for issues registering for summer learning programs.

On the first day of registration, many people reported technical issues prevented them from signing up on Monday.

Registration was scheduled to open at 8 a.m. But the Vancouver School Board, citing “increased volume of requests,” reported at about 9:30 a.m. on social media that the site was “temporarily unavailable.”

The courses are offered to high school students in math, science, social studies, and more, in order to acquire credits towards post secondary entrance requirements like for universities. Courses are also offered to improve marks to ensure someone is able to graduate or move ahead in their course work, and therefore can be critical to a student’s studies.

There are also courses available for younger grades and for students from other districts who just want to review the course work and learn more. Over the last two years, courses were limited and 2022 was slated to be a hopeful return to somewhat normal levels.

In an update posted later Monday morning, the VSB said “service disruptions” were occurring throughout the day.

Some parents of students looking to register for classes weren’t able to access the system until nearly 2 p.m., and several took their frustrations to the school board on social media.

Again citing a “high volume of requests,” the Vancouver School District urged people Monday to be patient.

“Staff have been actively managing the situation to resolve it. We continue to ask families to check back to the registration site. If their registration is interrupted, they are asked to please try again,” the Vancouver School District told CityNews in a late-afternoon statement.

It said more than 5,800 course registrations had been completed.

“We understand this is frustrating. We thank everyone for their patience and apologize for the inconvenience this has caused. We encourage families to visit to the site and keep an eye on the District’s social media channels for updates.”
