First ever marriage proposal in B.C. legislature receives resounding yes

It was a break from business as usual at the B.C. Legislature today, when an MLA proposed on the floor, earning rare, unanimous all-party support.

Port Moody-Coquitlam MLA Rick Glumac decided to pop the question Wednesday, however he decided to make his big move with an audience.

Just before session began, Glumac stood up and introduced Haven Lurbiecki, who was sitting in the public gallery.

“I’d like to acknowledge one person in particular, and that is my partner, Haven Lurbiecki, who is up in the gallery today. Haven, I just want to say you’re an amazing person with such a big heart and such a passion for making the world a better place, and every day you make my world a better place,” Glumac exclaimed to his soon to be fiancée.

Although stakes were, nerves did not stop Glumac from professing his love and popping the question.

“I just have one question for you. Will you marry me?”

The legislature burst into applause and Lurbiecki eased the MLA’s nerves with her elated “yes.”

“I think that was a yes. In order to make it official, I’m going to go to the gallery.”

If the proposal was not enough for the couple, B.C. legislature Speaker Raj Chouhan said it was a marriage proposal to go down in history.

“I think that was the first proposal ever made in any Commonwealth parliament, inside.”
