Langley mayor faced with censure from city council

The City of Langley’s council has censured the mayor but no one is saying why.

On Tuesday, the city council decided to issue a motion of censure and sanction against Mayor Val van den Broek for conduct unbecoming of a member of council.

In a statement released Thursday, the council said they could not disclose reasons for the investigation due to privacy legislation but the mayor’s actions warranted a response.

“(We) took the matter very seriously and would not have taken such actions over a minor concern,” the council said in a statement.  “Council assures the community that due process and procedural fairness were followed.”

In addition, van den Broek has been kicked off a number of appointments including the Fraser Health Municipal Advisory Council and Youth Advisory Committee.

An independent investigator was brought in, and the council said the mayor was given a chance to partake in the investigation process.

“The mayor was provided with a fair opportunity to participate in the process and to respond to the allegations prior to council’s consideration of the censure motion.”

The council said van den Broek was in breach of the City’s Respectful Workplace Policy, the Workers Compensation Act and the Occupational Health and Safety Guidelines and Policies.
