Nearly 60 animals found abandoned, emaciated at Surrey property

By Victoria Mann

According to the BC SPCA, 59 cats and kittens and one ewe have been rescued from a abandoned property in the Cloverdale area of Surrey over the weekend.

The home where the animals were found was “extremely unsanitary” according to Eileen Drever, senior officer for protection and stakeholder relations for the BC SPCA.

Drever adds that there were “large amounts of feces piled throughout the house and smeared on multiple surfaces, urine-soiled carpets and furniture, piles of garbage, flies and mounds of hoarded items.”

The 59 cats are domestic short hairs ranging in age from a few days old to approximately seven years. Drever says many of the cats are suffering from medical issues, including bloody feces, uptper respiratory infection and limping, as well as being dehydrated and emaciated.

“There was no water visible, and the cats immediately crowded around the bowls of water and food our officers put down,” Drever explained.

The lone ewe, which was also injured, was found in the backyard, surrounded by garbage, broken glass, and overturned furniture.

“It was challenging for our animal protection officers to navigate in the home due to the amount of garbage and debris.”

All of the cats have been triaged and assessed at BC SPCA facilities in Surrey and Chilliwack and will continue to receive care until they are well enough to be put up for adoption.

“Whenever we rescue such a large number of animals at one time, it puts enormous strain on the resources of our busy shelters,” says Drever, adding that “the BC SPCA is extremely grateful for any donations to help with the care of these 60 animals.

The organization adds if you would like to donate, to please visit spca.bc.ca.
