A man has been shot and multiple schools are in lockdown as police investigate reports of someone allegedly seen carrying a rifle in the Toronto area.

Officers received reports of a man carrying a gun in the Port Union neighbourhood just before 1 p.m. on Thursday.

Witness Mike Grieve tells CityNews police shot an armed man near William G. Davis Junior Public School. The Toronto District School Board (TDSB) tells CityNews a body is under a tarp.

The witness tells CityNews that man has died. The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been notified.

“I drove around the neighbourhood and heard that they were looking for someone armed with an assault rifle and they ended up shooting him,” Grieve said in a video sent to CityNews, which shows a heavy police scene and paramedics.

The TDSB says William G. Davis Junior Public School, Joseph Howe Senior Public School, and Sir Oliver Mowat Collegiate Institute are in lockdown.

The TDSB says Charlottetown Junior Public School and Centennial Road Junior Public School are in hold and secure.

Toronto police say there is no threat to public safety and encouraged parents to pick up their children from William G. Davis Junior Public School.
