Golden Ears Park reopening after problematic black bear killed

After Golden Ears Park was closed Tuesday due to a black bear in the area — conservation officers say the bear has been killed.

Officers previously said the animal had become too comfortable around humans.

The BC Conservation Officer Service (BCCOS) noted the bear had broken into cars to try and get at the food inside.

In one instance, the bear is said to have surprised campers after it tried to get inside a trailer, while the people were in it.

Golden Ears campgrounds reopens at 7 a.m. on Wednesday.

Despite the bear being put down, people are being reminded to not to leave food out or feed wildlife, with the BCCOS noting “a fed bear, is a dead bear.”

Being responsible with food and garbage is also recommended to decrease other wildlife conflicts.

While the provincial park is set to reopen on Wednesday, those who want to go for a walk or a picnic as of Friday must plan ahead, as the park is among three areas to fall under the park pass system.
