Vancouver man pleads guilty to stabbing in coffee shop stranger attack

A Vancouver man will spend three years in prison following a random and unprovoked stabbing at a downtown coffee shop.

David Morin, 28, pleaded guilty to aggravated assault on Tuesday, in connection with the January stabbing inside the Tim Hortons at Harbour Centre near Seymour and W. Hastings streets.

Security footage showed the victim, who police described as a newcomer to Canada, standing near the door when a man ran up from behind and repeatedly stabbed him before running away.

Morin was arrested a few days later, after receiving tips from the public.

In recent months, the Vancouver Police Department has mentioned a rise in stranger attacks.

This one at the coffee shop happened just days after police went public about another attack in the downtown area, which happened in front of Hotel Georgia on New Year’s Eve. In that case, a man grabbed a woman and pushed her into a potted plant, before knocking her into the exterior wall of the hotel and off her feet.

He then let her go and left the scene. The 22-year-old woman walked away after the incident.
