Vancouver Killarney lockdown caused by school project prop: VPD

A lockdown at Killarney Secondary School in Vancouver Thursday was caused by a student carrying a prop, police say.

The VPD was called to the school around 10:30 a.m. after “reports of a person with a weapon.”

That prompted a large police response, with the ordeal lasting about two hours as VPD officers went room to room to search the premises.

Police eventually found no suspects, adding no injuries were reported.

In an update Friday afternoon, investigators said it was determined the “axe seen yesterday at Killarney Secondary” was nothing more than a prop as part of a school project.

“We applaud the quick thinking & cooperation of all staff and students who believed this was an active threat in the school,” the VPD said in a tweet.

Though no threat was found, the incident shook many people.

“Me and my friends who were walking down the stairs by the caf, we saw a bunch of kids running and screaming. So we just booked it. We ran outside,” one student said.

“I looked down and just sprinted into a classroom. The teacher started telling kids to enter. He closed the door, turned off all the lights, and then we all kind of sat down and waited.”

Thursday’s lockdown at Killarney came just one day after a bear spray attack at the same school. A number of students were taken to the hospital as a precaution, with police saying they believe the suspects are students from another school.
