Vancouver heat sets in as Lower Mainland sees first blast of summer in 2022

Despite a cold, wet spring, the official start to summer has brought more of what you would expect for this time of year in B.C.

The heat that’s settling into the Lower Mainland has prompted special weather statements for all but a few regions of the province this weekend.

Areas farther inland in the Metro Vancouver and Fraser Valley regions are set to see daytime highs rise into the low 30s, though Environment Canada saying overnight lows will fall into the mid-teen range. Closer to the water, temperatures are expected to hover in the mid to high 20s.

The agency warns of elevated risks of heat-related illness as the mercury rises. It notes there is also expected to be an increase and snowmelt and snowpack instability, adding “increased stream flows due to run-off are probable.”

With many looking to cool off this weekend, you’re being reminded many bodies of water remain cool for this time of year, given how mild temperatures have been leading up to this first unofficial mini heat wave.

Elevated temperatures are expected to last into early next week. Environment Canada expects temperatures will “return to near-normal values” by mid-next week.
