Buntzen Lake parking lot reservation system now in effect

Those hoping to visit a popular swimming and walking spot north of Port Moody will have to plan ahead.

Buntzen Lake, a BC Hydro reservoir, now has a reservation-only parking system in place starting Monday.

The new system was introduced as a measure to deal with the increasing number of visitors over the last few years.

“On busy days, high traffic volume blocks the main access road, Sunnyside Drive for residents and emergency vehicles in the Village of Anmore. We’re testing a new parking pass to help alleviate congestion and ensure everyone can access our recreation area safely,” BC Hydro said.

Parking passes are available to book at midnight one day in advance of a visit.

It’s important to note Buntzen Lake has no cellular or internet service, meaning those who don’t get a parking pass won’t be able to obtain on location.

Visitors are urged to have a copy of the pass saved on their phone (due to the aforementioned internet issues) or printed and ready to present.

While passes are free, there are three options to choose from.

The morning pass is valid between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m., the afternoon is available from 2 p.m. until the park closes.

“Afternoon pass holders must arrive at least 30 minutes before the end of the parking pass period,” BC Hydro said.

There is also an all day pass.

Anyone hoping to park close by and avoid the reservation system will find themselves out of luck, as the community of Anmore does not allow for street parking for those visiting the lake.

Another alternative is to take the bus. Learn more here.
