Former Canucks Roberto Luongo, Sedins named to Hockey Hall of Fame Class of 2022

Three former Vancouver Canucks have been named to the Hockey Hall of Fame Class of 2022.

Roberto Luongo and Daniel and Henrik Sedin officially received the honour on Monday. This year marks each of their first year of eligibility.

The former goalie was the 2011 William M. Jennings Trophy winner but never won a Vezina despite being a three-time finalist. He didn’t win a Stanley Cup either, however, he backstopped Canada to gold at Vancouver 2010 in front of the home fans.

Luongo went on to win a second Olympic gold as a backup in 2014. His 489 wins rank fourth and his 77 shutouts ninth all-time in NHL history.

He split his career with the Canucks and Florida Panthers after a brief stint with the New York Islanders — who drafted him in 1997 fourth overall.

The identical twins, born roughly six minutes apart on Sept. 26, 1980 in Ornskoldsvik, Sweden, became the first set of siblings to both hit the 1,000-point plateau in the NHL. They played their entire NHL careers in Vancouver.

The brothers were drafted second and third overall by the Vancouver Canucks in 1999. Daniel and Henrik both retired at the end of the 2018 season.

Daniel wrapped up his last season with 55 points, for a total of 1,041 in 1,306 NHL games. Number-22 won the Art Ross Trophy and Ted Lindsay Award in 2011.

Henrik finished with 50 points, for a total of 1,070 over 1,330 NHL games — many of which he donned the ‘C’ for Vancouver. He won both the Hart and Art Ross in 2010.

Henrik, who wore number 33, won the King Clancy Memorial Trophy by himself in 2016. Both he and his brother were the NHL’s first King Clancy co-recipients after their final season in 2018 as the players who best exemplified leadership qualities on and off the ice and who made a significant humanitarian contribution in the community.

In addition to Luongo and the Sedins, Daniel Alfredsson and Rikka Sallinen also received the nod. Meanwhile, Herb Carnegie was inducted as well, being honoured posthumously.
