Innocent bystander injured at Williams Lake Stampede shooting

Two people were sent to hospital and another was arrested following what RCMP called a targeted shooting at the Williams Lake Stampede on Sunday afternoon.

“Police believe this to be a targeted shooting. However, one of the victims was an innocent bystander,” said RCMP Cpl. Madonna Saunderson.

One of the victims was an innocent bystander, but Mounties did not provide further details into the other person wounded in the shooting.

The victims are expected to survive, though Saunderson says she doesn’t know the extent of their injuries.

Hundreds of people were watching the rodeo’s bull riding event when the sound of gunshots rang out around 3:30 p.m. leading to fear and confusion.

A video posted of the incident shows many in the audience standing up and looking to the back of the stands following the sound.

The announcer then quickly declared over the PA system that the stands would be evacuated.

“Do not run, please keep calm,” the announcer said as people began making their way to the exits.

Stampede President Court Smith is among those commending the response from rodeo staff during the emergency.

“Our announcer did an excellent job of having people exit the facility,” Smith said. “I want you to know that everybody was out safely.”

The City of Williams Lake says people who left their belongings behind will be allowed to retrieve them, but will have wait until officers give the go ahead.

“The City of Williams Lake is saddened to hear of the incident at the Stampede Grounds on Sunday afternoon. As the investigation continues, we will be sharing supports and information as it becomes available. Many thanks to the Stampede Association and the RCMP for their quick and effective response,” the City of Williams Lake says in a social media post.

One suspect was arrested following the incident. RCMP have not released their name or details on a possible motive, only saying there is no further risk to the public.

The RCMP also did not provide further information into the weapon used, only saying that the investigation is ongoing.

“Anyone who may have been in the area may have seen or heard anything, know anything, may have dashcam video or even video on cell phone of the events that were happening prior to the shooting … please contact the Williams Lake detachment,” Saunderson said.
