Abbotsford Police officers crash during call to marijuana grow-op

Two Abbotsford police officers are hurt after they were involved in a serious crash while responding to a call of shots fired.

According to the department, the officers were called to the area of Townshipline Road near Highway 11 just after 4:30 a.m. Monday when they crashed along George Ferguson Way with a concrete wall.

Police note no members of the public or other vehicles were involved in the crash. The officers were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

“Definitely the roads were wet at the time. Obviously, we’re very early to determine that. Like in any police-involved collision, there’s a lot of things that get looked at — from vehicle speeds to the onboard computers, all the normal stuff that would happen in any type of collision of that magnitude,” explained Sgt. Paul Walker with the Abbotsford Police Department, who adds the cause of the crash remains unclear at this time.

The officers are expected to be released from hospital later Monday.

“The main thing is nobody was seriously injured in this case. Our officers are getting connected with their families, who are attending the hospital. It’s a step at a time,” Walker added.

Abbotsford marijuana grow-op invasion

Meanwhile, other officers who responded to the initial call have determined there was a home invasion at the site of a marijuana grow op. No one appears to have been hurt.

“It’s a known location for us in the city,” said Walker, noting the investigation is also in its early stages.

It’s unclear if anything was taken from the facility.

Walker tells CityNews police have seen some local grow-ops targeted in recent years.

“They’re happening all throughout the Lower Mainland, it’s not specific to Abbotsford. Obviously with our rural farm areas, we do have some of these. A lot of these we would know where they are, but some of these we don’t,” he said of local marijuana production businesses.

“Obviously, when you’re involved in this type of operation, the risks are higher for people that are coming to steal or want to take advantage of what you’re growing there. It’s a concern for us, for sure, and we do things to try to mitigate that risk to people.”

Police are asking witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage from either location to get in touch with them.
