Nanaimo police-involved shooting leaves man dead

A man is dead after an incident in Nanaimo, where shots were fired by police.
Mounties say they were called Saturday afternoon to reports of a “confrontation” between a man and woman outside a car stopped on Haliburton Street near Highview Terrace.
“Upon police arrival, the man had allegedly produced a weapon. Shots were fired by police and the man was injured,” reads a statement from the RCMP.
Paramedics responded, but the man died at the scene. Police say no one else was hurt.

Investigators have identified the victim, but have not released his identity. They say the two people involved knew each others.
The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO BC) has been called in, as is the case whenever someone dies or is hurt during an interaction with police. IIO BC will look into whether police actions or inactions contributed to the man’s death.
