Police fire shots after officer attacked on Downtown Eastside, VPD says

Shots were fired by Vancouver police on the Downtown Eastside after they say a 53-year-old man attacked officers with a weapon.

Vancouver police say an officer was attacked while sitting in their car.

“[It happened] near East Hastings and Columbia Street at about 8 a.m. this morning when a man carrying a weapon approached the police car and struck an officer through an open window,” said a police statement.

“During the altercation shots were fired by a VPD officer,” they added.

Witnesses nearby the scene told CityNews they heard four gunshots.

The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) says they have been called to conduct an investigation.

Police say the officer received “a serious head injury” and was taken to hospital. The shooting victim is currently in the hospital and police said earlier in the day they were non-life threatening injuries.

The man remains in custody for assaulting the officer.
