DTES machete attack suspect arrested, charged

A man has been arrested and charged in connection with a machete attack on Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside in June.

It happened on June 19 near the Empress Hotel, in the area of Main and Hastings streets, when two people were loading luggage into a taxi.

The incident, which the VPD has described as a stranger attack and “completely random,” sent the two people to hospital with “significant” head and neck wounds.

The suspect is said to have left the scene right after, with police initially providing a limited description.

In the weeks since, the VPD was able to obtain security footage of the suspect leaving after the attack. He has since been identified as 37-year-old Kenneth Stephen Solowan.

      Police say Solowan was arrested Wednesday near Chinatown. He faces two counts of aggravated assault and remains in custody.

      He is set to appear in court on Aug. 17.
