B.C. heat records break amid temperature spike

There’s no doubt it’s been hot across much of B.C. the last couple of days, but we now know that the heat has been record-breaking in some parts.

In Abbotsford, the mercury climbed to 33.7 degrees Tuesday afternoon, breaking the previous high of 31.8 for Aug. 30 set in 1987.

In Squamish, temperatures hit 33.2 degrees to break the previous record of 28 degrees from 2003.

Meanwhile, farther inland, the Merritt area saw temperatures soar to 35.6 degrees on Tuesday, surpassing the 34 degree record set in 2009 for Aug. 30.

The Kelowna area also experienced high heat, with 34.1 degrees recorded. The previous record there was 33.9 degrees set in 1967.

Temperatures were even higher in the Kamloops, Cache Creek, and Trail areas, at 36, 36.6, and 37.1 degrees respectively.

With temperatures expected to remain on the higher end Wednesday, CityNews Meteorologist Michael Kuss says there’s once again a potential for more records to fall.

He notes cooler temperatures are expected to follow for the weekend.
