Fire breaks out in Vancouver’s Chinatown

A fire broke out in the Chinatown area of Vancouver Friday.

It appears crews have gotten the blaze under control.

According to Vancouver Fire Chief Karen Fry, the fire was “in the roof” of a building along Keefer Street, near Main Street.

“Our team hitting it hard to try to stop this fire from spreading,” she wrote in a tweet.

Acting Assistant Chief Dan Nichols with Vancouver Fire says they believe all people made it out.

Images and video from the scene showed smoke rising from the building, with flames also visible. Smoke was also being reported around the area.

Some people, including Vancouver incumbent city councillor and 2022 candidate Rebecca Bligh, also reported what felt like an “explosion” in the area, though nothing has been confirmed.

“Still rattled from the ground vibration and the sound of whatever caused it,” Blight wrote on Twitter. “Looks like police were already on scene before the sound of the explosion went off.”

It’s unclear what caused the fire.
