Mom of boy at centre of Vancouver Amber Alert involved in dispute over care

The mother of the little boy at the centre of an Amber Alert issued in Vancouver earlier this week says she was involved in a dispute over his medical care.

The woman makes several claims in an eight-minute video posted last week — prior to the Amber Alert issued Monday night.

In it, she says she was fighting the Ministry of Children and Families over doctor-ordered medical care for her three-year-old, who was taken from BC Children’s Hospital Monday.

“I’m currently in a battle with the ministry over the wellbeing of my child, which could end in them taking him away from me,” she said in the video posted several days ago.

The video is featured on a fundraising page, which has amassed thousands of dollars — much of which came after the Amber Alert was issued by Vancouver police.

The woman says she was in the process of deciding on whether or not to proceed with immediate treatment for her son, who she was told had a serious condition. She says social workers became involved.

She says she was told “if you refuse this treatment, I will have to report you to the child ministry, and they will file your response as neglect to your child’s health.”

The woman goes on to say that social workers told her they would “be sending enforcements to take your child to give him the medication he needs.”

Both the child and woman were found in Alberta Tuesday morning. Police said at the time that “the suspect has been arrested” and that the boy was “now receiving care.”

In later statement, the Vancouver Police Department says it is continuing with its “criminal investigation to determine the motive and to better understand all of the circumstances surrounding the alleged abduction. This investigation will take time and we don’t yet have all the answers.”
