Wildfire ignites in Coquitlam

A small but growing wildfire is burning in Coquitlam.

The flames which are either on or near the park lands of Minnekhada were first reported on Saturday afternoon.

It’s estimated the fire, which is in it’s infancy, is around 0.25 hectares in size. That was as of 3 p.m. Saturday.

The BC Wildfire Service told CityNews that the region is Coquitlam Fire and Rescue’s jurisdiction, but they have asked for help.

Coquitlam Fire and Rescue requested an initial attack crew, which is made up of three people, and two helicopters, to douse the flames with water.

Minnekhada Regional Park, a 200-hectare natural park in northeast Coquitlam along the Pitt River, was closed to maintain public safety after the fire broke out, according to Metro Vancouver.

There’s no word yet on what caused the fire.

CityNews has reached out to Coquitlam Fire and Rescue for more information.
