Travellers between B.C. and Alberta can use Kicking Horse Canyon over long weekend

If you’re looking to travel between B.C. and Alberta over the Thanksgiving weekend, the Kicking Horse Canyon section of the Trans-Canada Highway will be open.

The section of the highway between Banff and Golden has been closed periodically for months as crews continue to work on upgrades.

From Friday Oct. 7 to noon on Tuesday Oct. 11, the highway will be open with no stoppages.

This will save drivers about an hour-and-a-half of travel time, the only other route is to head south to Radium Hot Springs on Highway 95, then back up to Banff on Highway 93.

After Thanksgiving, B.C.’s ministry of transportation says there will extended closures until Dec. 1.

The area has been under construction for months, as crews work to expand the highway into four lanes.

The B.C. government says the final step is estimated to be done in the winter of 2023-2024.
