ICBC re-issues 11,000 gas rebate cheques

If you’re still waiting for your rebate cheque from ICBC, you’re being urged to contact its customer service line.

While in July the province’s insurer said every cheque was in the mail and on their way to customers, ICBC told CityNews Wednesday it has since had to re-issue nearly 11,000 cheques.

“If customers believe they are entitled to a relief rebate and have not yet received it, our Insurance Customer Service team can help re-issue the payment,” the insurer said in a statement.

ICBC says some customers who have already contacted the organization had already received and deposited their cheques, so they are asking customers to double-check their bank statements before contacting the customer service team.

“Prior to calling, customers may consider signing up for direct deposit so we can re-issue the payment faster. Customers on a payment plan with direct withdrawals are still required to sign up for direct deposit if they wish to receive their rebate electronically,” the insurer explained.

This comes as some people have been waiting well over six months since the province announced B.C. drivers would be getting an ICBC rebate to help offset the high cost of gas.

In September, the insurer said about 3.5 million cheques had been issued, totalling $396 million.

The money is part of a promise made by the provincial government in March 2022. The ICBC website says the rebate is meant to “help ease the financial challenges facing drivers in our province right now.”

British Columbians who had a personal basic auto insurance policy active at any time in February are eligible for the $110 rebate. Commercial drivers get a bit more money, $165, with Premier John Horgan previously noting these people tend to have higher expenses.

Gas prices in the province have been at record highs recently, hitting a North American record of $2.419 per litre of regular gas this month. Gas prices in Metro Vancouver, however, are expected to drop dramatically by mid-next week to under $2 per litre for regular gas.
