    City hears contentious meeting over future of Jericho Lands in Vancouver

    Municipal elections in B.C. are Saturday and we’re breaking down the candidates in the City of Abbotsford, where the city is getting a brand new mayor.

    Current Mayor Henry Braun, who gained national attention during last year’s devastating floods, is not running again.

    There are four candidates for the new mayor of the city.

     

    Troy Gaspar

    Gaspar is a long-time farmer with Sunrise and suns farms.

    He says he is running to be a farming advocate and defend farmers in the City of Abbotsford.

    His social media says he studied at the University of the Fraser Valley.

    David Pellikaan

    Pallikaan has worked in construction for most of his career.

    In a riff on former U.S. president John F. Kennedy’s inaugural address, he’s running on the platform: “Ask not what you can do for your city, but what your mayor can do for you.”

    He says in his first year in office there will be no increase in property taxes and promises a $500 rebate back to homeowners in Abbotsford.

    He adds his team will ensure they build a strong Abbotsford for families and that Abbotsford’s open for business.

      Ross Siemens

      Siemens is a current Abbotsford city councillor.

      He owns his family business Hub Motor Service in the downtown Abby area.

      Siemens’ is running on creating a transparent and effective city hall, investing in parks and recreation centres, and advocating for affordable housing.

       

      Manjit Sohi

      Sohi is part of several community organizations, but most notably has a leadership role in Sports Abbotsford.

      If elected he plans to streamline home-building approvals, build more infrastructure, create jobs, and invest in public safety.

      Sohi has called Abbotsford home for 33 years and raised his three children in the community.

       

      Voting day for B.C.’s municipalities is Oct. 15.
