Elderly man breaks hip in Chinatown assault: Vancouver police

A 93-year-old man has been taken to the hospital with a broken hip after Vancouver police say he was knocked to the ground in Chinatown Tuesday.

It happened just after 3 p.m. The VPD says the man, who has lived in the neighbourhood for 30 years, was heading to a bakery in the area of Main and East Pender streets when he was “pushed over by a stranger.”

The senior was helped by several bystanders before he was taken to be treated.

Police have released surveillance footage of the incident, noting it happened in a heavy pedestrian and vehicle traffic area. Investigators are hoping the public can help identify the suspect.

“Our officers have been canvassing the neighbourhood since the assault, and we have now located video of the incident,” said Sgt. Steve Addison.

“We’re still working to find people who witnessed the assault, as well as those who stopped to help.”

Anyone with information or video from the area around the time of the assault is asked to contact the VPD’s Major Crime Section at 604.717.2541.
