Homicide investigators have publicly identified the victim in Monday’s deadly shooting in Vancouver, saying his death is believed to be related to the ongoing Lower Mainland gang conflict.
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) says 38-year-old Vishal Walia was the man killed in the targeted shooting at the University Golf Course on UBC Endowment Lands.
“IHIT is urging anyone who had contact with Mr. Walia in the days leading to his death, to please contact police, as we continue to build a timeline of events,” said Sergeant Timothy Pierotti of IHIT, Tuesday. “We are still appealing to anyone with dash cam video to secure the footage and to contact us immediately.”

Officers were called to the golf course just before 10 a.m. Monday for reports of a shooting. When they arrived, they found a man who had been shot. Despite trying to help him, the victim — now identified as Walia — succumbed to his injuries.
A short time later, investigators say a vehicle was reported on fire in a laneway in the area of West 20th Avenue and Crown Street.
IHIT says it continues to work with Vancouver police to determine whether the two incidents are related.

The homicide team is looking to speak with anyone who was in the area or has dash-cam footage from the University Golf Course between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. They would also like to speak with anyone who was in the area of 20th Avenue and Crown Street or who has information about either investigation.
