Surrey’s Doug McCallum won’t seek recount after election loss to Brenda Locke

It appears the mayor’s race in Surrey will not be settled in a courtroom after all.

According to a statement from Doug McCallum’s Safe Surrey Coalition, the incumbent will “no longer pursue a judicial recount” after his legal advisors reviewed the local Elections Act.

On Oct. 15, McCallum finished second to incumbent councillor Brenda Locke, but her margin of victory was within 1,000 votes.

Locke took 33,311 votes Saturday night, while McCallum got 32,338.

McCallum had conceded the race that night. However, he walked back that concession a day later.

At the time, a statement from the Safe Surrey Coalition said McCallum’s legal advisors were reviewing the Elections Act on the process of ordering a judicial recount through the BC Supreme Court.

Friday’s announcement means Locke’s victory will stand unchallenged.
