British Columbians can expect a downpour this weekend, with Metro Vancouver and six other regions under rainfall warnings.
Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued the warnings to both the inland and coastal sections of the Central Coast, East and West Vancouver Island, the Fraser Valley, the North Coast, Howe Sound, and Metro Vancouver due to an atmospheric river.

For the regions under a warning, ECCC says at least 50 mm of rain is expected along with strong winds. For Metro Vancouver, up to 100 mm is expected near the North Shore Mountains and Howe Sound.
The agency says the rain is expected to “gradually intensify” late overnight Saturday through Sunday evening before easing off. The heavy rain could cause flash floods and water pooling on roads, with flooding possible in low-lying areas, ECCC warns.
Additionally, seven other B.C. regions are under special weather statements for rain.
CityNews Vancouver Meteorologist Michael Kuss said Friday this weekend’s storm is only half the length of the three-day atmospheric river that hit the province last year, causing catastrophic flooding.
“This river is around for about a day or day-and-a-half, so the rainfall totals aren’t going to be as dramatic and the saturation and the flooding [will be] nowhere near on the same level,” he said.

B.C.’s Ministry of Public Safety says it is prepared to use the Alert Ready system to warn people of any immediate threats of flooding. The ministry also says it is prepared to deploy sandbags and other flood mitigation resources should they be needed this weekend.
