The public mischief trial for Surrey’s outgoing Mayor Doug McCallum is set to begin on Monday.

Just over two weeks after losing the civic election to mayor-elect Brenda Locke, the outgoing mayor is set to go on trial.

McCallum was charged in December of 2021, after an altercation in a grocery store parking lot that occurred in September of the same year.

The mayor claims an opponent of the city’s police transition ran over his foot his foot in a South Surrey parking, but it was McCallum who ended up being charged.

He claimed the incident happened after a confrontation unfolded near the Save-On-Foods with RCMP supporters who had been gathering signatures against the city’s police transition.

Recently, McCallum has also been under scrutiny after Locke says he returned a city vehicle with heavy damage following the election.

A picture of the damaged vehicle was tweeted by concillor Jack Hundail on Oct. 16, where apparently the mayor returned the vehicle after losing the civic election the previous night.

Locke says the vehicle repairs will be paid for out of McCallum’s own pocket.

The public mischief trial is set to last for seven days and begin on Oct. 31.
