Mounties in Richmond are urging parents to read labels closely after a child is said to have “inadvertently consumed” a piece of Halloween candy containing cannabis.
The RCMP says officers were called just before 10:30 p.m. after the child had been trick or treating along Auburn Drive Monday.
The child, whose age was not disclosed, was taken to the hospital by her parents after she got sick. Investigators say they reported the incident to the RCMP out of concerns that candy containing THC — a type of psychoactive cannabinoid found in cannabis — was being handed out to other kids.
“While we hope this was not an intentional incident, we felt it was important to issue this public warning in the hopes of preventing any other child from inadvertently consuming a THC [based candy] product,” said Cpl. Adriana O’Malley.
The RCMP says no other children who were trick or treating with the child inside a complex in the area have found THC candies.
“As parents, we are urged to check our children’s candy to ensure it’s sealed and hasn’t been tampered with but we may not be looking for candies containing THC,” explained O’Malley.
“We are urging all parents to take that extra few minutes to ensure you read the labels carefully as well as tell your children what to look for on the label so that no other child is affected.”
Police note this appears to be an isolated incident. However, they are urging any parents who find THC-containing candies in their children’s treats to report it to the RCMP at 604-278-1212.
