Deltaport video shows near-miss as semi tries to pass truck

Police are out with a warning after what could have been a catastrophe on the Deltaport overpass last month was captured on video.

Dash-cam footage shared by the Delta Police Department shows a semi-truck trying to pass another truck on the narrow overpass, crossing a double solid line while doing so, on Oct. 19.

As the oncoming vehicle, from which the video was taken, approaches, it’s brought to a halt as the semi trying to pass quickly gets back into its lane, narrowly avoiding a head-on crash.

“Members of our truck section worked with partner agencies to investigate and identify the driver,” Delta police said in a tweet Wednesday.

It notes the driver of the semi was handed two tickets, one for driving without due care and another for crossing a double solid line. The fines total close to $500 and amount to nine points.

      Fine raises questions

While the driver was ticketed, many on social media are questioning whether the punishment goes far enough.

Some say “$500 is not nearly enough.”

“A suspension for reckless driving would have cooled his jets a bit,” one social media user writes.

“I drive a rig. That fine is not nearly sufficient to curb that driver’s behavior,” another post reads, also calling for a suspension. “This is how he makes a living and he needs to be reminded he doesn’t have the right to try to kill us while he’s earning it.”

Others note that many drivers often do the same thing, pointing to concerns about the overpass.

Police are urging people who witness unsafe driving to contact the non-emergency line at 604.946.4411. If it is an emergency or immediate, for example, related to impairment or distracted driving, people are asked to call 9-1-1.
