An 18-year-old has been killed after a stabbing in a Surrey school parking lot.

The RCMP says officers were called to the school along 66 Avenue on Tuesday afternoon. When they arrived, the teen was found seriously hurt.

Despite first responders’ efforts, the victim did not survive.

Surrey RCMP Cst. Vanessa Munn says the victim was not a member of the school community.

“The investigation remains ongoing. One suspect has been arrested and transported to Surrey RCMP cells,” she told reporters.

Munn adds that Surrey RCMP’s Serious Crime Unit is working alongside the Integrated Homicide Investigation Unit.

Mounties say the area around Tamanawis Secondary School will be blocked off “for a significant amount of time.”

A statement from the high school says there will be support for students who may be affected by the incident.

“Please be assured that the health and safety of our students and staff is always our first priority and we are all deeply affected when situations like this occur,” the statement reads. “Our school will have additional counselling supports available and we will be checking in with all students.”

Few other details are available at this time, including a possible motive.

Anyone with information is asked to contact homicide investigators at 1.877.551.IHIT (4448) or ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.
