The “victim” was treated at the scene and brought to the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

He was later released after being treated.

CCTV footage of the altercation was later reviewed by police officers, and it was determined that the “victim” had initiated the fight.

Police officers arrested the 32-year-old Nanaimo local Thursday afternoon for assault with a weapon.

“Based on the evidence obtained to date, investigators believe the accused, who has mental health issues, initiated an unprovoked attack on a marginalized person of no fixed address”, said R/Const. Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.

Anyone who might have information about what happened is asked to contact the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345.
