Small earthquake hits off coast of Tofino

A small earthquake hit just off the coast of Vancouver Island Friday evening.

According to Earthquakes Canada, a 4.8 magnitude quake struck just before 8 p.m. about 29 km northwest of Tofino.


MLA for Mid Island-Pacific Rim, Josie Osborne, says in a tweet her house “shuddered” at the earthquake.

No injuries or damage has been reported, EC says. There was also no risk of tsunami as a result of the quake, according to Emergency Info BC.

It was the second earthquake in as many days off the coast of Vancouver Island. On Thursday, a 4.0 magnitude quake was recorded 292 km southwest of Tofino.
