RCMP in Grand Forks is reminding the public to safely dispose of old weapons after someone brought a live grenade to the detachment last week.
On Dec. 1, Mounties say someone came by the office to turn in some guns and ammunition they didn’t want anymore. Included in the haul, police say, was “a realistic looking grenade.”
Officers quickly took the grenade and safely stored it, calling in the RCMP’s Explosive Disposal Unit. It was found the grenade “appeared military” and Mounties called the Canadian Armed Forces.

Mounties and the army exchanged photos and information about the grenade, with the military eventually deciding to come and deal with it.
When troops arrived the next day, they found the grenade was, in fact, live, and disposed of it.
The RCMP says it’s not uncommon for people to come across old weapons when cleaning out a family member’s home. The detachment reminds people not to bring these weapons to a police station.
RCMP Sgt. Darryl Peppler says the incident could have been a lot scarier than it was.
“We are trained to treat all firearms and other weapons as live, and this is a good example as to why we do that,” he said.
