Charities in need of holiday support: survey

By James Paracy

Canadian charities are in a bleak position heading into the holiday season.

A survey from charity advocate group Imagine Canada shows the number of Canadians ready to donate is down to 48 per cent. This marks an eight per cent drop from 2021. Those who do plan on giving say they’ll likely be giving less than usual, according to the group.

Imagine Canada says the timing isn’t great for a massive drop in donations either, as charities and non-profits receive a major percentage of their donations at the end of every year. Many families depend on support from charitable organizations as expenses spread across the table for the holidays.

Meanwhile, in addition to a drop in donations, charities are finding fewer Canadians are lending their time to volunteer.

Imagine Canada’s report says Canadians want to see government funding come into play for these charities.

Imagine Canada President and CEO Bruce MacDonald echoes their sentiment and adds there may be a plan on the table.

“Canadians place high value on the essential front-line work being done by charities and non-profits … Greater federal support need not cost taxpayers more money,” MacDonald explained.

According to the report, charity leaders have proposed a plan where funds would be better spread out and improve overall stability throughout charity organizations.
