IIO called to Surrey after suspect critically hurt

The Independent Investigations Office of BC is investigating a shooting in Surrey that left a man in critical condition.

The office tasked with investigating police-involved deaths says its members were deployed to the area of 152nd Street and 100 Avenue in the Guildford neighbourhood Saturday afternoon.

Police reported to the IIO that they had attempted to stop a suspect who had an outstanding warrant and was a person of interest from another investigation.

Ron MacDonald, chief civilian director for the IIO, says officers reported that after the suspect was stopped, he shot himself as police were approaching his vehicle.

“The most important part of our investigation will be to determine whether or not any actions of police actually played a role in this person’s death,” MacDonald added.

He says the man, who has not been identified at this time, remains in critical condition at Royal Columbian Hospital.

A heavy police presence remained in the area throughout Saturday, and 100th Ave between 150th and 152nd continues to be blocked off as the investigation continues.

CityNews has reached out to Surrey RCMP for more information.
