City of Vancouver reducing winter compost collection

By Astrid Agbayani

The City of Vancouver is reducing the frequency of their green bin compost collection.

Starting Dec. 19, crews will come to collect every two weeks instead of every week.

The city says the schedule is a temporary change for the winter as volumes are fewer due to fewer yard trimmings. The colder temperatures, the city says, also help to minimize the odours coming from compost bins.

According to the city, the weekly schedule resulted in service delays and increased overtime for staff. Changing the service to a bi-weekly schedule would make the service more predictable, especially during times when it’s impacted by snow and ice operations.

Scaling down operations would also reduce wear and tear on the city’s equipment and sanitation trucks. The trucks are scheduled to be replaced in 2023 but the city says some of the vehicles will take up to two years to be delivered due to manufacturing and supply chain issues.

The city’s schedule change comes as many households will be serving up large holiday meals in the coming weeks.

Normal weekly green bin service will resume on Mar. 6, 2023.
