Construction moving along on new Surrey arena

A new, twin-pad ice rink being built in Surrey’s Cloverdale neighbourhood is moving along with another step in its construction.

On Monday, city council approved a $3.1 million contract for the supply and installation of piles for the new Cloverdale Sport and Ice Complex.

It’s the second construction contract approved by council since the project was given the go-ahead back in July. Construction officially began in August.

Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke says the contract approval is a “milestone” for the project.

“With foundation work starting, this new destination sports complex is on its way to providing much-needed additional ice in Cloverdale,” she said.

“When completed, the Cloverdale Sport & Ice Complex will have two NHL-sized sheets available for team play and public use. This project has also been designed to grow as the community grows by having the option to add a third ice sheet.”

The arena is slated to have seating for 200 spectators, along with other multi-purpose rooms for the community. The facility has been designed to be energy efficient and meet “the highest standards for accessibility,” the city says.

The $55 million project is being built on 177B Street, near 60 Avenue and is expected to open in the fall of 2024.
