A Surrey Fire Services member has been injured after an emergency call turned into a multiple-vehicle collision Sunday morning.
Speaking with CityNews, Acting Assistant Chief of the Surrey Fire Services, Mark Seter, says it began around 7:30 a.m., when snow was falling around the region, with reports of a vehicle that had crashed on 176 Street near 88 Avenue.
“While fire crews were attending there, several other cars coming down the hill managed to lose control of their vehicles in the snowy and icy conditions,” he said.

Seter says one of the vehicles hit an ambulance before catching on fire, quickly being put out by the fire crews on the scene.
Shortly after, Seter says a commercial vehicle coming down the hill also lost control, eventually hitting a fire truck that had been blocking off the scene. He says a firefighter suffered minor injuries in the crash, with the fire truck getting “seriously damaged.”
“Our advice to all drivers is to slow down and drive appropriately to all conditions,” Seter advised.
“We would also like to remind drivers that when you see flashing lights in the roadway to slow your speed down significantly and give them a wide berth of room to maneuver so they can focus on the task of serving the emergency.”
Surrey Fire could not say if any civilians were injured at the scene, nor confirm how many vehicles were involved. CityNews has reached out to Surrey RCMP for more information.
The incident came at a time when Metro Vancouver was getting blanketed with heavy snowfall. Environment and Climate Change Canada had issued a snowfall warning, which has since been rescinded. However, cold conditions with the potential for more snow is on the horizon as a cold weather system chills the province in the days ahead.
The inclement weather led to other vehicle collisions around the region, along with some flight cancellations at YVR, and a section of the Coquihalla Highway being shut down.
