Between nightmare commutes and widespread flight cancellations, the latest snowstorm has wreaked havoc on the Lower Mainland. But some have taken to social media to show off the lighter side of things.
From cute animals to funny gags to creative forms of transportation, Lower Mainlanders have made their best attempt to lighten the mood during the hectic snow event.
One video shared on Twitter Tuesday morning shows a snow-covered swimming pool with someone attempting to swim in it.
“Can’t make it to the poll today. Driving into the 40cm of snow in our backyard in Port Moody,” the post reads, accompanied by a video showing a person — dressed in a bathing suit, swimming cap, and goggles — diving right into a fluffy layer of snow.

Another video posted online Tuesday shows someone trying to ski their way around the snow-covered city streets of Coquitlam.
“Skiing down Como Lake Avenue in Coquitlam. I’ve seen it all!” the Twitter user wrote.

Meanwhile, in true Vancouver fashion, cycling remained the preferred mode of transportation for some.
“Vancouver has the most dedicated cyclists and honestly this guy is doing better than most drivers,” one person tweeted.

Along with the tweets, Reddit also became a place for people to share their experiences with the snow, with a thread called “Snomageddon 2022.”
“Be kind to each other. This season is stressful enough and with the snow it’s even more so, we don’t need to pile onto one another,” the discussion prompt stated.
Some commenters have noted how their work was cancelled for the day in light of the snow. Others, meanwhile, said they didn’t even bother trying to commute.
“I looked out the window said ‘nope’ but I still check Google maps to see how bad the delay is. Currently 1h30m delayed for my first bus,” a commenter said. “It’s not worth it, I work construction and even the guys with trucks are calling it a day.”
Other commenters have pointed out the exorbitant price for ridesharing services like Uber, sharing trip costs in the hundreds of dollars. Others offered their vehicles to people who urgently needed to be somewhere.
“If anyone has something important they need to get to, I’d be willing to give them a ride,” a Reddit user posted, describing a vehicle equipped for conditions and experience behind the wheel in winter conditions.
“Not saying I’ll get you to where you need to go in record time, but if it’s super important, I might be able to help.”
Another Reddit thread showcased a person’s small dog frolicking through snow that was roughly the height of the animal.

One local is also helping some smaller creatures stay warm, by placing a handwarmer underneath a hummingbird feeder.
The heater will help keep the drink from freezing, so the small animals can stay hydrated.

Meanwhile, almost every flight out of YVR Tuesday has been cancelled due to the snowy conditions, leaving thousands of holiday travellers stranded at the airport.
In an email to CityNews, an airport spokesperson says staff are doing their best to help out those who are stranded.
“I can confirm we are providing refreshments and doing everything we can for people in the terminal. We have an update coming shortly regarding the status of our operations,” YVR stated.
