Vancouver’s TransLink sees delays as winter weather hits

It’s been a day of considerable delays for TransLink, especially for its buses.

Although delays are hitting hard as some routes remain blanketed in snow, TransLink insists its operations are slowly improving as the day goes on.

TransLink’s Shruti Joshi says bus services are hit hard when road conditions get to this level.

“We have been telling people to avoid traveling where possible. Minimal bus services were available in some areas this morning,” said Joshi.

Only minimal bus service is available in some areas earlier Tuesday, including parts of Vancouver, Burnaby, and the North Shore.

The day saw periodic delays on the city’s Skytrain system, with the Canada Line stalled with track and switch issues on more than one occasion.

The Canada Line’s issues have been centered after the sun went down on the area between Bridgeport and YVR-Airport stations.

Joshi stresses the importance of planning ahead and being aware when using transit during a significant weather event like this, advising transit users to keep an eye on TransLink’s communication and help systems.

“I would really like to let our customers know that they should build in extra travel time and check the route by consulting our trip planner, signing up for transit alerts, or by following us on Twitter so that they know exactly where they are with their routes,” said Joshi.

TransLink tracks ongoing issues through its alerts page, though at one point today, that page went down and displayed no issues across the system.
