Vancouver in luck as de-icing contractor receives salt shipment

Lower Mainland highways will continue being de-iced as Mainroad gets another shipment of road salt.

Mainroad says a new shipment of de-icing salt has just arrived at the Port of Vancouver and is being distributed to storage facilities tomorrow.

The contractor responsible for the maintenance of local highways says the demand for de-icing salt has been extreme and unusual this early in the winter season.

In the meantime, Mainroad says it wants everyone to use the salt responsibly, given restrictions on availability.

The contractor also points out that they use two materials: anti-icing brine and de-icing salt, and that they will be out around the clock to deal with the coming weather conditions.

Demand for Mainroad’s work will undoubtedly be needed heading into the holiday weekend, as forecasts warn of a major snow dump and freezing rain hitting Vancouver overnight heading into Friday.
