Burst pipe floods Surrey grocery store

A Safeway grocery store in Surrey’s Fleetwood neighbourhood is closed after a rooftop pipe burst Friday.

Photos of the location on 152nd Street show water pooling at the front entrance, along with printed-out signs indicating that the store is closed.

In an email to CityNews, Sobeys, the company that owns Safeway, says a rooftop sprinkler line burst around 1 p.m. Friday afternoon, causing water to seep through the roof.

“The store immediately activated its Emergency Response Plan, safely evacuating customers and staff from the store and calling the fire department,” said spokesperson Paul Wyke.

Nobody was hurt in the incident, Wyke adds.

The company says a restoration crew is working on cleaning up the water, while local fire officials will assess and repair the broken sprinkler line.

The store will reopen when Safeway gets approval from fire officials.

As Metro Vancouver saw frigid temperatures throughout the week, a local plumber warned that calls for service would be on the rise. One told CityNews emergency calls increase as much as 40 per cent during cold weather, as heating and plumbing often breaks when the temperature dips below freezing.
