North Vancouver RCMP warn public about attempted $9,000 bail scam

North Vancouver RCMP are warning about an attempted bail scam that may be hitting different regions in Canada, including the Lower Mainland.

Mounties say a scammer contacted an elderly couple on Tuesday, claiming to be a lawyer representing their grandson who had been arrested.

Police say the fraudster told the couple that in order to make bail, they had to pay $9,000.

The couple was asked to withdraw the money in cash, and police say the scammer told them someone would come to pick it up in the afternoon.

A short time later, two females came to get the money, but the victims were suspicious and didn’t give them the money.

Later, Mounties say the couple contacted thier grandson who told them he wasn’t in jail, and didn’t need to be bailed out.

Although the victim’s didn’t hand over the money to the scammers, they aren’t the only ones to have been contacted.

“Investigators have determined that the suspects maybe travelling through out different regions in Canada and committing these bail frauds. Similar frauds with the same suspect descriptions have been reported in other provinces and they are currently in the Lower Mainland committing these frauds,” Cst. Mansoor Sahak said.
